With in each teams conference they play four games, two home and two away, and two more games, one home and one away, against non-conference teams.
The four teams with the best records from each conference qualify for a elimination tournament. The winner of each group will play for the prestigious MLS Cup, the championship cup. Now for the team with the best record over the 32 game regular season they win the MLS Supporters' Shield and get a chance to compete for the next CONCACAF Champions' Cup.
